Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair
Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula
The chapel in the solitary prison at Port Arthur. The convicts spent all their time in solitary confinement, except when they were brought to chapel. Here, they stood in individual wooden compartments (like standing in a coffin), while two soldiers stood with guns at the bottom. Convicts used to communicate with each other while they sang hymns.
